Glossary of Central Vacuum System Terms
Canister
The container that holds the dirt and debris collected by the vacuum system.
Power Unit
The central component containing the motor, fan, and other parts that drive the central vacuum system.
Quiet Operation
A feature in some central vacuum systems that reduces noise levels during use.
Air Watt
A measurement that considers both the airflow (measured in CFM or CMH) and the water lift (measured in inches of mercury or H2O) of a central vacuum system. This provides a comprehensive assessment of the system’s cleaning power and its ability to remove dirt, debris, and allergens from a space.
Suction Power
Also known as water lift capacity, this measures the motor’s strength and suction power, usually in inches of water lift. It indicates the vacuum’s ability to lift water through a hose or wand. A higher water lift rating typically means more powerful suction, capable of lifting heavier debris and liquids.
